Introducing: Noir in Media with Natalie Nadeen

Introducing: Noir in Media with Natalie Nadeen

Behind the Curtain: Why I Created Noir in Media

While some kids wanted to be in front of the camera, I was drawn to everything happening behind it.

Growing up in the late ‘90s and early 2000s as an only child, media meant more than just entertainment for me—it offered company, curiosity, and an escape. I enjoyed the usual children’s programming; Canadian shows were outstanding at the time. Still, I was also captivated by pop culture: music videos, television, films, books, entertainment news, documentaries, and the stories around them.

Unbeknownst to me, I wasn’t just consuming media—I was studying it.

Looking back, I realize I always wanted to know how the final product came together—who made decisions, shaped narratives, and worked behind the scenes. Long before algorithms shaped our consumption, I was falling down endless Google rabbit holes trying to understand the machinery behind entertainment and culture.

Those early curiosities quietly set the course for my professional path.

From Curiosity to Career

By 2026, the kid who got in trouble for talking too much in class had ironically built a career in communications.

Over the years, I have worked across various areas of media and entertainment — from content creation and public relations to podcasting, photography, interviews, red carpets, and digital storytelling. My professional journey eventually led me to my current role as Senior Communications Manager in Canada’s film and television industry, where I support programming around equity, access, storytelling, and representation in media.

Along the way, I’ve collaborated with influential voices, worked behind the scenes on major initiatives, interviewed creatives, and seen the work outside the spotlight. These moments only deepened my childhood fascination.

Truth is: culture is not shaped solely by the people audiences see.

Executives make strategic choices, publicists build narratives, producers assemble projects, marketers analyze audiences, creators take risks, and countless others behind the scenes influence the media we see every day.

That realization inspired me to launch Noir in Media—transforming my lifelong inquisitiveness into something tangible.

What Is Noir in Media?

Noir in Media highlights the people shaping today’s media and culture.

Hosted by me (Natalie Nadeen), the show features conversations with creatives and industry professionals across film, television, music, and digital media. We’ll unpack their journeys, motivations, and the realities of building a career in the industry.

Noir in Media looks past the headlines—revealing the people shaping the culture we experience, from rising talent and established legends to unsung voices behind industry moments.

But beyond interviews, this platform represents something larger to me.

It’s a place to discuss media’s cultural impact, representation, and impactful work that often goes unnoticed.

Today, media moves faster than ever. Conversations happen in real time. Viral moments shape public opinion, and social platforms have transformed who gets seen, heard, and remembered.

Yet even in this hyper-visible era, much of the real influence still happens quietly behind the scenes.

That’s the conversation I want to explore.

Why These Conversations Matter

We often talk about media only after it reaches us—after the film premieres, the album drops, or the interview trends. But rarely do we stop to examine the people, systems, and decisions shaping those moments before they ever reach the public.

Understanding media beyond the surface helps us better understand culture itself.

It allows us to think critically about visibility, power, storytelling, and representation, and encourages us to look beyond headlines and engage more intentionally with the content we consume.

Noir in Media is rooted in the same curiosity I felt as a child, sitting in front of a television and wondering how everything came together behind the scenes.

Only now have those questions evolved into conversations.

This Is Just the Beginning

Moments from my journey so far have shown me how expansive this industry is, and every experience has strengthened my appreciation for media and those who shape it. Noir in Media reflects an ongoing journey built on passion, curiosity, and a drive to spotlight important voices.
